Best AI Assistant (2026):
Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity Ranked
The best AI assistant depends on what you are trying to do. Claude leads for coding and writing. ChatGPT leads for images and integrations. Gemini leads for Google Workspace. Perplexity leads for research with cited sources. This ranking comes from a development agency that integrates all four APIs in production applications -- not from a week of review sessions.

Two Types of AI Assistant You Should Know
Most "best AI assistant" searches conflate two distinct categories. The first is AI chatbots: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity -- standalone tools you interact with through a chat interface. The second is AI integrated into productivity software: Microsoft Copilot inside Word and Outlook, Gemini inside Google Docs and Gmail, Notion AI inside your notes. The first type you open separately. The second type lives where you already work.
For most individuals, the practical decision is: which standalone AI chatbot at $20 per month covers the most of what I need? For most organisations, the decision is: which AI integrates into the productivity suite my team already uses? These are separate questions with separate answers. The ranking above covers the standalone chatbots. The section below covers the productivity tool integrations.
AI Built Into Your Existing Tools
How a Development Agency Uses These Tools
At CV Infotech, we use more than one AI tool because different tasks benefit from different models. Claude is our default for development work -- Claude Sonnet runs inside Cursor and handles the majority of our code generation, debugging, and technical writing. ChatGPT's API powers certain client-facing features in applications we build, particularly where DALL-E image generation is required. Gemini's 1.5 Pro model is useful for the codebase analysis work we do when onboarding a new legacy project -- the 1M context window lets us send an entire codebase in one prompt. Perplexity handles competitive research and fact-checking on client markets.
The most common mistake we see organisations make: choosing one AI tool and using it for everything. Claude is excellent at coding but cannot generate images. Perplexity is excellent for research but is not the right tool for writing a marketing email. A $20 per month subscription to each of Claude and ChatGPT -- $40 total -- covers nearly every AI task a business encounters. That investment typically returns its value in the first week of use.
