Every week someone asks me which is better, ChatGPT or Copilot, and every week I have to ask them back which Copilot they mean. Microsoft has put the word "Copilot" on three completely different products: Microsoft 365 Copilot inside Word and Excel, GitHub Copilot inside your code editor, and the free Copilot app that replaced Bing Chat. The three products hiding behind one name
Microsoft did something unusual: it named three separate products the same thing. Microsoft 365 Copilot lives inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams, and it works by reading and writing your actual documents and emails. GitHub Copilot lives inside your code editor and autocompletes and explains code as you write it. The Copilot app is a free general chatbot on the web and in Windows, closer to a ChatGPT competitor than to either of the other two.
None of these three share a model, a price, or a target user. When someone types "chatgpt vs copilot" into Google, roughly three different intents are hiding in that one search, and most comparison articles only answer one of them while pretending to answer all three.
ChatGPT vs Microsoft 365 Copilot, the real comparison
This is the comparison most people actually mean. Microsoft 365 Copilot's advantage is context: it can see the spreadsheet you're editing, the email thread you're replying to, and the meeting notes from Teams, and it acts on all of that without you copying and pasting anything. For a finance team drafting a report from existing data, that context is worth more than a marginally smarter model.
ChatGPT's advantage is that it isn't boxed into Microsoft's ecosystem. It reasons better on open-ended problems, it isn't limited to Office file formats, and its paid tiers give you access to more capable reasoning models than Copilot currently offers. If your work already lives in Microsoft 365 and stays there, Copilot's integration wins. If your work spans tools, files, and platforms Microsoft doesn't touch, ChatGPT's flexibility wins.
What CV Infotech actually uses
We don't use Microsoft 365 Copilot in client delivery work. Our stack runs on OpenAI, Anthropic, and Gemini APIs depending on the task: UltimaBot and UltimaWriter, the AI platforms we built and still maintain for our client Steven since 2019, route between OpenAI and Anthropic models based on what each task needs. We use Gemini 1.5 Pro specifically for legacy codebase audits, because its context window is large enough to hold an entire old codebase at once.
For day-to-day development, Cursor with Claude Sonnet is what our team actually writes code in, not GitHub Copilot and not Microsoft's tools. We don't use DeepSeek or Grok on client work either, mainly because our US, UK, and Australian clients have data sovereignty requirements those models don't clear. This isn't a knock on Microsoft's products. It's just not what solves our clients' problems.
The build vs buy question nobody asks about "which AI to use"
Picking between ChatGPT and Copilot is the easy part. The harder question is what happens after you pick one: who owns the prompts, who audits the outputs before they reach a client, and who rebuilds the workflow when OpenAI or Microsoft changes pricing or deprecates a model, which both of them do more often than most teams plan for.
We've watched clients build entire internal processes around a single AI tool's current pricing tier, only to have that tier change six months later with no warning. Doing this well in-house means someone on your team is tracking model releases, pricing changes, and API deprecations as an ongoing job, not a one-time decision. That's the part that quietly eats the most time.
Where we fit
If you're trying to decide between ChatGPT and a Copilot product for your own personal workflow, you don't need us, just pick based on where your work already lives.
